Squirrels on your feeder can pose a big threat to birds. They can also eat all your seed. But keeping them off can be a challenge. Here are a few things you can do to squirrel proof your feeder.

This first thing you can do to stop the squirrels is to place your feeder away from all “launching areas”. Places where the squirrel can jump from and onto the feeder. This includes trees, houses, fences, and laundry lines. Look into getting a squirrel baffle; a clear or colored dome. The sloped, slick surface gives the squirrel nothing to cling to and he will often slide right off. This can be placed above or below the feeder on the mounting pole.

You can also try looking for a special feeder. These feeders use spring-loaded, weight sensitive technology that shuts off access to feeding ports when a squirrel jumps onto the feeder. With proper placement and the right feeder, your feeder should be squirrel proof.
